Local residents seriously injured in fiery two-vehicle crash in Northern Indiana

(Marshall County, IN) – Two Ripley County residents were seriously injured in a fiery two-vehicle crash in northern Indiana Sunday night.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office says a car occupied by Jarrod Nichols of Milan and Riley Duerstock of Batesville was hit by a pickup truck on U.S. 31.

Nichols, who was driving, was assisted out of the car while Duerstock was trapped before being cut out of the wreckage.

The pickup truck was fully engulfed when rescue crews arrived.

The driver – identified as Arturo Mendez of White Pigeon, Indiana – was helped out of the vehicle by witnesses.

All three were taken to a nearby hospital.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor and the investigation is ongoing.

Nichols is a 2017 Milan High School graduate and was sworn in as an Aurora police officer back in June.
