(Statehouse) – A bill authored by State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) that would establish a Division of Historic Sites within the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and transfer management of historic sites from the Indiana State Museum to the DNR, recently passed unanimously out of committee.

But Senate Bill 209 has been sent to the Senate Appropriations Committee before its heads to the full Senate for consideration.

Leising says the State Budget Director Zac Johnson is getting involved in this issue, and plans to look at what can be done to provide better funding for historic sites such as the Whitewater Canal District in Metamora, which has fallen into disrepair.

“I’m actually fine with that. Whatever it takes to get support for the historic sites, whether it’s Metamora or, quite frankly, our first State Capitol in Corydon, which also needs serious help and attention,” Leising said.

Leising appeared on Tuesday’s edition of WRBI’s The Daily Pod. You can listen to the full interview by clicking here.
