(Laurel, IN) – Attempted murder charges have been filed against a Laurel man following a report of shots fired at a residence last weekend.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says officers from nearby counties also responded to the scene on the 25,000 block of Sanes Creek Road in Laurel just after 6 am Sunday, and the investigation determined that a disturbance took place at the home.

An hour and a half later, 37-year-old Joseph Steele allegedly returned and fired multiple shots into the occupied home, but the suspect fled before law enforcement arrived.

Deputies located Steele around 7:30 am at a home on Vanatta Road. He was arrested without incident and lodged in the Franklin County Security Center in lieu of bond.

The sheriff’s office says this was an isolated incident and that there was no threat to the public.

No one was injured as a result of the shots being fired into the home.

Deputies emphasize the preliminary charges filed against Steele are for booking and bail purposes only.

Once the investigation is finished, deputies will forward their findings to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of what, if any, formal charges would be filed.
