Lady Wildcats Edge Lady Twisters In Tennis

After winning two matches to start the week, Franklin County took on Oldenburg Academy in a non-conference match winning 3-2. Both teams have had successful seasons thus far so expectations were high heading into the match.

Winning for Franklin County to get the first point was the 2 Doubles duo winning 6-1, 6-1. Shortly after, Oldenburg came back with a victory of their own winning at 1 Doubles 6-2, 6-0. With the team score a 1-1, it was all up to the singles players to decide the match. Franklin County continued to feel comfortable with the situation they were put in, as their singles players had only combined to lose 2 matches all year to that point, both coming at the 2 Singles position. Oldenburg would yet again get another team point at 2 Singles while winning 6-0, 6-2. Klei at 3 Singles for Franklin County was able to keep the ball in play and make it tough on her opponent to get a 6-2, 6-1 win over her opponent. It was 2-2 following the 3 Singles match, which meant the 1 Singles result would decide the match as a team. Both players battled back and forth. After 2 and a half hours, two tiebreakers, and many gut-wrenching points, Lilli Stewart was able to beat her opponent with a slim 7-5 tiebreaker score. Franklin County beat Oldenburg 3-2 to remain undefeated on the season along with Stewart (#1 Singles) and Klei (#3 Singles).

On Thursday, May 3, Franklin County will travel to Union County to take on the Patriots in a non-conference match.

Coach Jeff Siebert had this to say on the match. “You couldn’t get a closer match than what we saw at 1 Singles. I hate that somebody had to lose that match. They both battled back and forth. Somebody would get down and then come storming back to take the lead. It came down to nerves at the end and Lilli prevailed to win the match. We don’t win the match though without wins at 3 Singles and 2 Doubles. 2 Doubles played very well tonight as they were the first ones off the court. Lauren at 3 Singles has played unbelievable all season. Both Lauren (Klei) and Lilli (Stewart) are undefeated which is a big reason we are where we are today. We knew this would be a good match and I am just happy we were able to get the three points needed to win.”
