The Greensburg Lady Pirates found themselves down 2-0 with the first 11 minutes of their match Thursday evening in Shelbyville but came back to defeat the Lady Golden Bears 5-3.
Shelbyville scored one minute into the game and utilized the same break-away play ten minutes later by Alexis Tackett to get their early lead. An unfortunate injury on a clean slide tackle took Tackett out of the game midway through the first half. At the 25 minute mark, Kasey Moeller got her explosive night start. Moeller used her speed on a breakaway to open the net for the Lady Pirates. At the 11 minute mark, Moeller equalized the game on another breakaway. Both teams continued to play aggressive and the score remained 2-2 at halftime.
Both teams continued the tough play throughout the first twenty plus minutes of the second half until Kasey Moeller played a nice drop ball to Maddi Hellmich on the 18 line for a left footed chip that found the back of the net to break the tie. With just under 9 minutes to play, Stephanie Bruns played a corner kick that pin-balled off both teams until Moeller collected for her third goal of the game. Shelbyville closed the gap with 3 minutes to play as a long chip took a wild bounce over goalkeeper McKella Lynette. With Shelbyville putting intense offensive pressure, the Lady Pirate defense was able to chip out a ball that Moeller ran down and scored her fourth goal of the match with 52 seconds remaining. This was a match that tested the Lady Pirates mentally and physically and the team held it together and kept encouraging each other to find the victory.
McKella Lynette earned the victory in net making 5 saves on the evening. The Lady Pirates tallied 32 shots on goal for the evening by Moeller, Hellmich, Bruns, Abby Bailey, Sierra Aylsworht, Danielle Schroeder, Michaela Myers, Cara Zeigler and Emma Overmyer.
The win brings the varsity team record to 5-5-1 on the season. The Lady Pirates will be in action Saturday morning in an EIAC match with Rushville at 10AM.
