The Batesville Lady Bulldogs honored their seven seniors on Thursday night as they hosted the Heritage Christian Lady Eagles. Georgia Gratz, Hailey Mohr, Ellie Waechter, Ashlyn Czerniak, Caitlynn Werner, and Gabby Gibbs were all recognized before the game for their 4 year dedication to the team.
Once the whistle blew, Batesville went to work early and were able to get a lead 6 minutes into the contest. Lauren Gutzwiller was taken down inside the penalty box and Batesville was awarded the penalty kick. Carlie Werner stepped up and put away the penalty kick easily putting the Lady Bulldogs up 1-0. Batesville would add two more goals in the half. Senior captain Georgia Gratz was able to find the back of the net for her 17th score of the season off an assist by co-captain Liz Heidlage. Werner netted her second goal after some nifty moves along the end line to dance around the Lady Eagle defender and slip the shot near post past the Heritage Christian goalie. Batesville outshot Heritage Christian 15-3 in the first half.
In the second half, Heritage Christian began to find some success on the counter-attack. With 23 minutes to go in the match, #13 Byers was able to get behind the Batesville back line and buried the shot into the far corner to make it 3-1. Batesville was able to stop the momentum with 2 more goals of their own. Both of the goals came from Davalos on direct kicks. Gratz drew a foul just outside the 18, and Davalos was able to bend the shot around the wall and into the back of the net. With 2 minutes to play, Davalos had a direct kick from 35 yards out that went up and over the goalie for the 5th Lady Bulldog score. 12 seconds to go in the game, Liz Heidlage looked to make a well-timed tackle on a Lady Eagle forward and the official signaled for a penalty kick. #4 VanderMeer put the PK away to round out the scoring to end 5-2.
Batesville will finish off their regular season for a chance to win conference against East Central. Both teams sit 6-0 in conference and will battle in St. Leon on Friday night at 5:00.
