Jury selection begins in Ripley County teen’s double murder trial

The older brother of 11-month-old Nathaniel Ritz (left) and two-year-old Desiree McCartney is scheduled to stand trial next week in connection with their deaths.

VERSAILLES, IN — Jury selection was set to begin Wednesday morning in Ripley County in the double murder trial of 17-year-old Nicklas Kedrowitz.

He’s accused of killing his two-year-old sister and 11-month-old brother on separate occasions at their Osgood home when he was 14.

Kedrowitz allegedly smothered his sister Desiree McCartney in May 2017. The Indiana Department of Child Services removed Kedrowitz from the family’s home but he was placed back in the home 81 days after his sister died. In July 2017, Kedrowitz allegedly smothered his brother Nathaniel Ritz.

Kedrowitz was found competent to stand trial as an adult following a series of court hearings nearly two years ago.

Jury selection is expected to take three days, with opening statements by the prosecution set to begin on Monday in Ripley Circuit Court.

If he’s convicted, Kedrowitz faces 55 years in prison on each murder count.

Kedrowitz is not eligible for the death penalty because of his age.
