John R. Steuver Jr, 89, Dillsboro

John R. Steuver Jr, 89, of Dillsboro passed away Thursday, July 18, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence surrounded by his loving family. John was born on Monday, January 14, 1935, in Milan; son of John Steuver Sr. and Helen (Miller) Steuver. John married the loved of his life, Marlene (Iceberg) Steuver, on September 18, 1954, and she preceded him in death on October 17, 2022. John worked as a carpenter through the union. He was a member of the Hope Baptist Church, National Rifle Association, and Old Time Fiddlers. He was a former state champion of the fiddler contest in Kentucky, played the fiddle at Renfro Valley in Kentucky, and was also a member of the Southeastern Indiana Musicians Hall of Fame. John was also nominated as Kentucky colonel and was a proud torch bearer for the Indiana Bicentennial. John loved to go to church and was past Deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in Milton. John enjoyed horseback riding, farming, and playing the fiddle. He also enjoyed tracing genealogy.

John will be missed by his sons Russell Steuver of Dillsboro and Gordon (Lisa) Steuver of Holton; daughter Donna (Gene) Crabtree of Pleasant; daughter-in-law Terri Steuver of Dillsboro; sister Beverly Hahn of Lawrenceburg; many grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents John and Helen Steuver; wife Marlene Steuver; son James Steuver; daughter Brenda Conley; and brother-in-law Charles “Bud” Hahn.

Family and friends may gather in remembering John from 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM, Monday, July 22, 2024, at Hope Baptist Church; 15593 US-50, Dillsboro, IN 47018. A service will follow at 12:00 PM with Pastor Phil Gabbard officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Memorials may be given in honor of John to Hope Baptist Church or Dillsboro Food Pantry.
