John Daniel Seale, age 91, of Brookville, Indiana died Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Golden Rule Living Center in Richmond, Indiana, following a lengthy illness.
Born March 22, 1933 in Booneville, Kentucky he was one of seven children born to the late Glass & Cynthia (Mainous) Seale. On January 10, 1959 he and the former Donna C. Jones were united in marriage and she survives.
He was a graduate of Owsley County High School with the class of 1951, and went on to Eastern Kentucky University where he became a Kentucky State Billiards Champion, graduating in 1955. He was then drafted into the United States Army, serving in France for two years. He returned home to Booneville, Kentucky in 1957 where he taught and coached in his hometown for several years. During his tenure coaching at Owsley County he attained an enviable coaching record, having taken his Owls to District five times during his tenure.
He moved to Franklin County, Indiana in 1968 and began his teaching career at Brookville Elementary, where he was instrumental in promoting basketball for the younger grades. He then became Cross Country and Varsity Basketball Coach at the former Brookville High School, finishing his tenure with the 1975 Sectional Basketball win. He was EIAC Coach of the Year in the 1973-1974 season. He remained a teacher at Brookville High School until his retirement in 1992, and continued to coach high school girls basketball; and coach at St. Michael’s School.
He was a member of the Brookville United Methodist Church, as well as the Bernard Hurst Post #77 of the American Legion, and was a member and past President of the Brookville Kiwanis Club.
Besides Donna, his loving wife of over 65 years, survivors include two children, John Garth (Julie) Seale & Joel Scott (Deborah) Seale, both of Brookville; two grandsons, Jared (Chantel) Seale and Austin Seale; two great-grandchildren, Juna Clay and Judson Scott Seale; two step-grandsons, Kelly Pflum & Casey (Angie) Pflum; as well as five step-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth (Ben) Reams of Sevierville, Tennessee; as well as a sister-in-law Laverne Seale of Dayton, Ohio.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Scrivener, three brothers, Edwin, Lowell and Harold Seale, an infant brother, as well as his grandson, Clayton John Seale.
John had a deep affection for his siblings and family. John had a love of travel and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed golf, pinochle, family reunions, and watching the Kentucky Wildcats play basketball.
Family & friends may visit from 9 until 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home, 1025 Franklin Avenue, Brookville.
Rev. Steve Rundel will officiate the Funeral Service at 12 Noon, Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted by the Bernard Hurst Post #77 of the American Legion.
