Jim’s Journal, March 2nd, 2024

The field in the 2024 boys’ high school basketball tournament across Indiana got a lot smaller Friday night, as the sectionals that had been underway this week made it to their final games.

In the action we had live on WRBI…  The South Ripley Raiders seemed to have an advantage, hosting a 2A sectional on their home floor, but… not so much.  The Raiders had their season ended by the Jets of Hauser, by a single point, 52-51.   And, in Single-A at Edinburgh, Jac-Cen-Del’s Eagles overcame the South Decatur Cougars, 44-35.  Those were just the couple games we were able to put on the air, but there was a lot more excitement, too.

What a battle it had to be, as Lawrenceburg needed 3 overtimes to get by Greensburg, finally beating the Pirates 38-36.

Other action included Switzerland County edging North Decatur, 52-48… Oldenburg Academy dropping Morristown 58-53… East Central stunning Columbus East, 41-37… Batesville easily outrunning Connersville 48-31, and Franklin Community shocking Whiteland, 66-56.

Now, the last few nights, there’ve been about 90 minutes allowed between games, just about enough time to finish one, but that’s not going to be the case Saturday night.  The IHSAA scheduling gods have set one championship game for 6:30, two at 7:00, and one at 7:30 in our area.  So, the one we’re going to broadcast will be that last one, which in Class Triple-A, pits the Lawrenceburg Tigers against the Batesville Bulldogs, in Sectional 29 at Greensburg.  Terrance Arney and I will hit the air about 7:10 this evening, again with the tip expected at 7:30.  Be sure to join us for the action here on WRBIRadio.com, on the radio at the Sports Voice, 103.9 FM, and on the new WRBI app.  Download it now from the iOS or Google Play stores!  You’ll be able to take us everywhere, and the app sounds much better than those old transistor radios ever did!

Other sporting notes include…  Cactus League spring training baseball seeing the Diamondbacks putting it on the Reds Friday, 12-8.  Today it’ll be Cincinnati facing the Colorado Rockies, first pitch set for 3:10, on 103.9 FM.  Tomorrow, the Reds take on the Royals, action starting at 3:05.

Men’s college basketball features 2nd-ranked Purdue hosting Michigan State tonight.  Before that, it’ll be Cincinnati hosting Kansas State, Western Michigan visiting Ball State, Xavier going to Georgetown, and Butler visiting DePaul.  Indiana State’s Sycamores get a visit from Murray State Sunday, and that’s also when Indiana visits Maryland
