Jim’s Journal, May 6th, 2024

Good thing this is a day off for the Reds, because they seem to need a break!  The American League East-leading Baltimore Orioles swept Cincinnati this weekend, 3-0 Friday night, 2-1 Saturday, then yikes–  11-1 to conclude the series Sunday.  Tomorrow, the Diamondbacks arrive at Great American for a new 3-game series thru Thursday.  After that, the Reds visit San Francisco for 3, then starting next Monday, they quickly return the visit to the D-Backs.  The broadcast of tomorrow’s opener with Arizona arrives on your radio at 6:10, only on the Sports Voice, 103.9 FM, WRBI.

 

Our local high school diamond lifers had plenty of games going on, on Saturday, for the first time this season.  In softball, East Central ripped Rushville 19-2, and South Dearborn belted Richmond, 12-2.  Baseball over the weekend-  Oldenburg Academy got by the Indy Genesis Homeschool 7-6, Jennings County edged Batesville 5-4, and how about those Franklin County Wildcats–  winning 2 on the road from Northeastern, first game 7-4 ‘Cats in 8 innings, second contest also Franklin County, 5-2.  And North Decatur’s Chargers dropped both ends of another double-header, the Jets of Hauser taking both their games, 7-1 and 2-0.

 

Lots of action coming on this first Monday of May–  North Decatur baseball’s right back on the horse after those losses, hosting Knightstown today.  Franklin County’s hosting Lawrenceburg, Connersville visits South Dearborn,  Jac-Cen-Del hosts South Ripley, Oldenburg’s at Centerville, Greensburg hosts East Central, and Rushville drops in on Batesville.

 

Softball to start the week includes OA hosting Rising Sun, South Ripley at Jac-Cen-Del, North Decatur visiting Eastern Hancock, Connersville goes to East Centra, Greensburg is at Rushville, and Batesville visits Southwestern of Shelbyville.

 

Both Milan teams are at Switzerland County today, and after a 15-0 loss to Edinburgh Friday, South Decatur softball gets another shot at the Lancers, today in Edinburgh.  And the Cougar boys will play at Edinburgh, as well.

 

Middle school track and field over the weekend had Batesville Middle taking part in a 9-team invitational meet in Connersville…  and both the Bulldog boys and girls winning!  The Batesville girls dominated, with a stunning 231 team points to 2nd-place Union County’s 77.  The boys’ meet was closer, but Batesville got strong performances in numerous events, and despite only winning 3 of ‘em, they won the meet with 116 points, to Connersville’s 89.

 

The second round of the NBA playoffs opens tonight, and the Pacers are in it!  They’re at Madison Square Garden to take on the New York Knicks in the first game of their best of 7 series.  Indiana got there by eliminating the Milwaukee Bucks in 6 games last week.
