Jim’s Journal, March 7th, 2024

Men’s college basketball’s going on this afternoon, with the Missouri Valley Conference’s annual Arch Madness tournament happening in St. Louis.  In the first game this afternoon, the top seeded Indiana State Sycamores had a bye, but have now learned that tomorrow they’ll be taking on the 9th-seeded Missouri State Bears.  Earlier this afternoon, the Bears pulled a slight upset, topping the Number 8 Racers of Murray State, 60 to 35.  Other games today and tonight include Valparaiso taking on Belmont, Evansville against Illinois State, and Illinois-Chicago facing Southern Illinois.

Games last night had IU’s Hoosiers digging up the Golden Gophers on the road in Minnesota, 70-58, and Butler’s Bulldogs topping the Musketeers of Xavier, 72-66.

Tonight, we’ll have more Reds Cactus League baseball on the air.  After Wednesday’s split-squad 2-0 loss to the Brewers and 6-2 win over the Padres, Cincinnati takes on the Cubs tonight.  The broadcast begins at 7:50, on the Sports Voice, 103.9 FM WRBI.

We can’t emphasize enough the excitement around here over boys’ high school regional basketball championship action…  the wait’s almost over–  since it’s Thursday, the games are only 2 days away now!!  Be sure to be with us for either game or BOTH Saturday, as Class 1A Oldenburg Academy faces Greenwood Christian Academy, and Class 3A Batesville battles Scottsburg, each game tipping at 4:00 that afternoon, with pregame coverage about 3:30.  That 3A matchup will be broadcast on 103.9 FM, but both will be getting to you here on WRBIRadio.com, and on our WRBI app, which now has a second stream available.  You can pick the stream right on your device, and easily keep track of all the action.

Our stars of tomorrow are busy working toward that future…  Middle school girls’ basketball this week has had the Batesville 7th-graders beating East Central 30-25 to win their second game of the SEI tournament, so they’ll play in the championship tonight.  The 8th-grade Lady Bulldogs beat Greendale in that tournament’s first round, 35-19, then topped East Central in the second, 24-16.  They’ll also be in a title game this evening.

6th-grade girls’ hoops at the St. Louis School unfortunately found the Cardinals losing 18-10 to Laurel this week.  They had a tough 3 & 7 season, but the 5th-graders just behind them finished 7 & 3.

The official relay of the Indianapolis 500’s green starting flag to the speedway for the May 26th race started earlier today, with 2-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Zach Apple waving the flag to start it on its way.  Just under 3 weeks after this year’s 500, Indianapolis will welcome swimmers from all over the US to the Olympic team trials, where they’ll battle to represent the USA this summer in the Paris games.

Tonight in the NBA, the Pacers host the Timberwolves.
