Jim’s Journal, July 20th, 2024

The Reds are now 0 & 1 for the second half of their 2024 baseball season, falling last night to the Nationals in Washington, 8-5.

Even Cincinnati-based observers had to admit Nats starting pitcher Patrick Corbin was sharp through 6 innings on his 35th birthday, despite having only had 1 win this season prior to Friday.  He retired the first 8 Reds he faced and thru 6 innings, allowed only 1 score on 3 hits.  One of the game’s best Reds plays was that first tally, Jonathan India hitting an RBI single in the 3rd inning.

That was all the offense they could muster for too long, however, as Cincinnati fell behind 8-1.  Elly De La Cruz singled in the 6th, stealing his major-league-leading 47th base of the season.  And it looked for a while in the top of the 9th like they might be able to pull off a miracle comeback, when the Reds finally started looking sharper on offense, scoring 4 times against DC relievers, including pinch-hitter Jake Fraley hitting a 2-run double.

But finally, All-Star closer Kyle Finnegan managed to retire Elly on a grounder, earning his 26th save in 30 opportunities.  The Reds and Nationals go at it again tonight, the broadcast coming to you at 6:15, on the Sports Voice, 103.9 WRBI.

Great news for a pair of Bengals football legends!  Tim Krumrie and Corey Dillon will be the 2 newest members of the Bengals Ring of Honor this fall, recognizing their numerous accomplishments for the team during their long Cincinnati careers.  They’ll be enshrined at halftime of the Bengals’ September 23rd game against the Washington Commanders.
