He was born April 28, 1944, in Milan, Indiana, the oldest of four children, to Cecil and Anna May Vaughan. Jerry graduated from North Dearborn High School in 1962. An athlete, Jerry was inducted into the East Central Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1961-1962 North Dearborn basketball team.

Jerry started his career in 1967 with Cincinnati Incorporated when it was still named the Cincinnati Shaper Company and retired after 42 years in January 2009. During the early years of their marriage, Jerry pursued his education at the University of Cincinnati, where he graduated in 1978 with a degree in Information Processing. Wickedly smart, Jerry sought out new hobbies constantly, from purely intellectual interests such as chess and choosing stocks, to physically demanding endeavors such as building furniture and rehabbing a house.
