James August “Jim” Hodges

James August “Jim” Hodges, age 74, of Batesville, Indiana, passed away at home on October 23, 2026. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Elmo and Elizabeth “Betty” (Luenne) Hodges.

Jim began his career as an assistant manager at Danner’s Variety and 3D Department Stores before going on to co-own Batesville Building Materials. He later finished his working career at Floyd Werner Concrete Construction. Jim dedicated many years to serving his community as a volunteer fire fighter and first responder with the Batesville Fire Department Life Squad, where he also served as an instructor. He generously gave his time to help others and remained committed to serving his community throughout his life.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves and was an active member of the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 in Batesville. He served as Post Commander from 2002 to 2004 and again from 2011 to 2023. He took great pride in the improvements made to the Post and in helping maintain a place where veterans and community members could gather. His many years of involvement reflected his dedication to the Legion and to his fellow veterans.

Outside of his work and community service, Jim loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He could often be found with a fishing pole in hand or enjoying a beer with a friend at a local watering hole. A storyteller, he enjoyed sharing stories and spending time with friends. He also helped make some of the best fried chicken around.

Jim was deeply grateful for the care he received from the LVAD Clinic at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, and appreciated the amazing staff who supported him throughout his care.

Jim is survived by his four children: Tricia (Wade) McQueary of Greensburg, Indiana; Amanda (David) Salatin of Bloomington, Indiana; Scott (Brittany) Hodges of Jacksonville, Florida; and Elizabeth (James) Mudlock of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his brothers, Paul (Tracy) Hodges of Batesville, Indiana, and Greg (Liz) Hodges of Monclova, Ohio; his sister-in-law, Kim Poole of Greensburg, Indiana; his grandchildren, Justin Wesseler, Jase McQueary, Wyatt, Boone, and Charlotte Hodges, Waylon and Oakley Mudlock, and Hayden Salatin; along with other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmo and Elizabeth “Betty” (Luenne) Hodges; and his brother, Michael Hodges.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2026, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 in Batesville, Indiana. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and remember Jim.
