Last week an article in the Indy Star caught my attention. Students from Union County High School dribble basketballs from Liberty to the Spartan Bowl in Connersville. This takes approximately 2 hours to complete. It was noted in the article that the students arrived in time for the 6 p.m tipoff of the reserve game. Some of them were “worse for wear” including blisters on their feet and scratches from falling down.
This tradition started way back in 1955 before there was a Spartan Bowl, and in those days it was Liberty High School not Union County; however, the tradition goes on. Many of the old traditions for high school basketball are gone, but this one has stood the test of time.
