INDOT and ISP remind drivers to slow down, move over

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Transportation and the Indiana State Police are reminding drivers to move over and slow down for emergency workers and in work zones.

Not all “work zones” involve road construction, but all workers on the road deserve attentive and cautious drivers, especially in emergency situations.

Indiana’s move over laws are intended to protect workers.

As soon as you see flashing emergency lights, you should slow down and increase the distance from the vehicle in front of you.

On multiple-lane highways, you should change lanes away from the emergency vehicle if it is safe to do so.

If you can’t move over, then you should reduce your speed to at least 10 mph under the posted speed limit and move as far away as possible within your lane.

Violating this law can result in a fine and license suspension of up to two years.

Causing death to a worker can result in a prison sentence.
