(Batesville, IN) – The City of Batesville is mourning the passing of Don Weigel.
The former fire chief passed away last Sunday at UC Medical Center at the age of 95.
Weigel served the community for 45 years, beginning his career with the Batesville Fire Department in 1951.
He was the department’s fire chief from 1978 until his retirement in 1996.
Weigel was a founding member of the department’s Batesville Rescue 10 Life Squad, and was one of the city’s first EMTs.
“He played an instrumental role in building the foundation of the Batesville Fire Department as we know it today. His vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to serving our community helped shape generations of firefighters and EMS providers,” the department wrote in a statement. “Chief Weigel’s dedication to the citizens of Batesville and his commitment to the fire service will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on through the department he helped build, the lives he touched, and the members who continue to serve in his footsteps.”
