More on Indiana Olympians… In the pool, Notre Dame’s Chris Giuliano competed in his 5th & final event Thursday morning, the 50-meter freestyle. Chris seems to have been a bit slower than he would’ve liked, though. He covered the distance in 21.97 seconds, but that was only the 17th-fastest time. The top 16 moved on to the semi-finals. Giuliano won his first gold medal as part of the men’s 4 x 100 meter relay last Saturday. Star Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton made his Olympic debut last night, as Team USA belted South Sudan in men’s basketball, 103-86. Haliburton only got into the game late, scoring 6 points and handing off 1 assist. Team USA faces Puerto Rico Saturday.
17-year-old Alex Shackell of Carmel swims in the women’s 200-meter butterfly and 4 x 200 freestyle relay today. The morning heats had the USA 4th fastest, getting into the final that comes up this afternoon. Before that, Alex will swim the butterfly final, after finishing 2nd in the semis. IU’s Anna Peplowski is also a member of that 4 x 200 freestyle relay team. A couple other Indiana names to keep in mind are Notre Dame grad Lee Kiefer leading the US squad in team foil fencing, after she won the individual gold medal… and Carmel’s Rajeev Ram and his partner Alex Krajiceck are playing for the gold in men’s doubles tennis.
