(Batesville, IN) – Gus and Nancy Hillenbrand were honored last Thursday as the 2026 recipients of the Robert R. Walsman Award, which is presented annually to community members who have generously dedicated their time, talent and treasure to Margaret Mary Health (MMH) and the community.

The award was presented by MMH Chairman of the Board George Junker following the Margaret Mary Health Foundation’s 42nd annual golf outing.

“Gus and Nancy have demonstrated an incredible commitment to stewardship — not only through their support of Margaret Mary Health, but throughout our entire community,” Junker said. “Oftentimes, you see something happening in the community and don’t even realize Gus and Nancy were involved in making it happen. They are truly two of the finest people I know.”

Bill Hillenbrand accepted the award on behalf of his parents, Gus and Nancy.

Named in honor of Robert R. Walsman, the award celebrates Walsman’s legacy as an avid golfer who helped start the MMH golf outing in 1984. Each year, the recognition is presented to those who share his passion for furthering the hospital’s mission and strengthening the community.

Originally scheduled for August, this year’s golf outing was rescheduled due to rain.

Despite the change in date, 35 teams participated and helped raise more than $85,000 to support MMH.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this year’s golf outing such a success,” said Jonathon Maple, MMHF Executive Director. “Moving the event to September presented some challenges, but our sponsors, golfers and volunteers continued to show up for Margaret Mary Health. The generosity of this community allows us to continue investing in the health and wellness of the people we serve.”

All funds raised support MMHF and its ongoing efforts to provide quality health care to the community.

Next year’s golf outing is scheduled for Thursday, August 12, 2027, at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club.
