Hessler convicted on 19 felony counts in series of sex crimes dating back to 1980s

SHELBY COUNTY, IN — A Greensburg man was convicted Thursday in Shelby Circuit Court on 19 felony counts in connection with a series of home invasion sexual assaults that happened between 1982 and 1985.

After an eight-day trial, the jury returned guilty verdicts against 58-year-old Steven Ray Hessler (pictured) on two counts of Rape, six counts of Unlawful Deviate Conduct, seven counts of Burglary Resulting in Bodily Injury, three counts of Criminal Deviate Conduct, and one count of Robbery.

All of the charges are Class A felonies.

Hessler was arrested at his Hendricks Street home in August 2020 after investigators linked him to the crimes through DNA evidence.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 1 and faces up to 50 years in prison on each count.
