Herbert K.Y. Sun, age 99 of Batesville, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2024, at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born March 12, 1925, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was the son of Wah Chong Soon and Wai Kin Soon. His ethnicity is Hawaiian -Chinese. He married Elvira (nee: De Guzman) on May 2, 1970, at St. Agnes Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. He obtained his industrial designer degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1955. After working at two companies in Cincinnati, he accepted a position as industrial designer for Batesville Casket. He worked there for more than 20 years until he retired in 1991. Herbert worked as a journeyman in the Air Force, and he was a member of the United States Army and served his country from 1945-1947. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal.
Herbert and Elvira enjoyed playing golf and traveling to several area golf courses as timeshare owners at Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. They held memberships at North Branch Golf Course, Greensburg Country Club, and Lakeside Golf Course in Milan. Aside from golfing, they traveled internationally. Herb was a simple guy who loved dogs and always wore his hats (like his security blanket). When asked, “What is your secret to long life? He always said “nothing”. And his reply to successful marriage: “silence!”
Herbert is survived by his wife Elvira Sun, and his three nephews and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack Sun of Honolulu, sisters Sally (William) Wong of Honolulu, Hawaii and Su Sun of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Memorial Services for Herbert will be held at a later date and he will be buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu, Hawaii.
