Greensburg man to be sentenced for series of 1980s sexual assaults

SHELBY COUNTY, IN — A Greensburg man who was convicted in a series of home invasion sexual assaults in the 1980s will be sentenced Friday.

After an eight-day trial in Shelby Circuit Court, 58-year-old Steven Ray Hessler (pictured) was found guilty on March 3 by a jury on two counts of Rape, six counts of Unlawful Deviate Conduct, seven counts of Burglary Resulting in Bodily Injury, three counts of Criminal Deviate Conduct, and one count of Robbery.

All of the charges are Class A felonies.

Hessler was arrested at his Hendricks Street home in August 2020 after investigators linked him to the crimes through DNA evidence.

“I anticipate most of the victims will attend and address the Court at the hearing.  We are expecting a sentence sufficient to ensure that he spends the remainder of his life in prison.  I have requested an aggregate sentence of 420 years,” said Shelby County Prosecutor Brad Landwerlen.
