Greensburg boys soccer was within a goal, 2-1, of South Dearborn at half, but the Knights struck four times in the second half to win 6-1.
South Dearborn coach Jonathan Wismann reports the heat seemed to slow SD down for much of the first half with the Knights allowing Greensburg to shoot eight times and scored once. South Dearborn finally scored its first goal around the 25-minute mark when junior Dana Lewis finished off of a free kick by junior Jason Hail with an assist by sophomore Nakia Scruggs. The Pirates answered with a headed goal off a corner kick by Greensburg forward Cy Miller. SD quickly responded with senior captain Ashton Cotton winning the ball in the midfield and sending a low pass to Lewis who made it 2-1 Knights with two minutes to go in the first half.
South Dearborn came out in much better form in the second half, especially on the counterattack. Sophomores Austyn Tibbs and Easton Schumann carried the ball out of the back countless times to lead the attack for the Red, White, and Blue. Senior captain Logan Ross and junior Gage Fenton held the Pirates to only four shots in half number two. SD pressed high and drove in four more goals with Lewis getting his second hat trick of the season plus one more. Jason Hail snagged a goal from a pass back to the top of the box from Cotton, and Easton Schuman drilled a powerhouse goal from around 35 yards out that bounced off the far post and into the net with the assist by Nakia Scruggs.
The midfield and wings did a great job keeping up the attack on the Pirates with sophomores Peyton Hill, Hunter Gates, and Riley Charvat leading the way along with senior Ben Cassini who set up multiple scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper Logan Heeke (junior) worked hard throughout the match tallying nine saves and only letting one go by.
We thank coach Wismann for the recap.
