(Ripley County, IN) – Napoleon firefighters were dispatched to a grain bin fire on Millhousen Road, just west of Napoleon, Friday morning.
Firefighters along with the help of thermal imaging found that the fire was burning just above the ventilation floor inside the bin.
Many unsuccessful attempts were made to remove the burning corn from the bin. Eventually, firefighters and the property owner determined the bin was too compromised, and the most effective approach at the time was to tear the bin down.
Once the bin was down, firefighters were able to access the mass of burning corn.
Firefighters were on-scene for nearly 10 hours. While some grain was salvaged, the bin was considered a total loss. One firefighter was treated for exhaustion and dehydration, but no other injuries were reported.
