Gene Cofield, 74

Gene Cofield, 74, of Wildwood, Florida, formerly of Versailles passed away at 3:45am, Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the home of his daughter in Madison. He was born at Covington, Kentucky on May 27, 1943 the son of Houston and Ida Geneva Schaffer Cofield. He was married to Gail Yauger on September 16, 2000 and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters Julie Scudder of Greenwood, Sally Cofield of Fishers, and Jill (Victor) Grossman of Madison; one step-son Chris Richmond of Versailles; one stepdaughter Kelly Richmond of North Vernon; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; one brother Daryle (Michelle) Cofield of Bloomington. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dennis. Mr. Cofield was a 1961 graduate of Aurora High School where he excelled in track, setting school records in various events. He was a former employee of Cummins Engine Company and had worked as an insurance investigator for Equifax in Versailles. He also worked as vice-president of collections for Mainsource Bank. Gene was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church and the Versailles Post Sons of the American Legion. He was a former member of the Versailles Fire Department, served as a scoutmaster, and was a former member and past president of the Versailles Town Board. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 15th at 11am at the Tyson United Methodist Church in Versailles with Rev. Mike Dixon officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10am until time of services Thursday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Versailles American Legion or the Tyson United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
