(Milan, IN) – The Milan Volunteer Fire Department was called to Milan High School early Friday morning on a report of a garbage truck fire.
Firefighters say it was around 4:38 a.m. when the truck driver reported seeing smoke coming from the vehicle’s bed area.
Upon arrival, crews located flames inside the truck bed.
Because of safety concerns for students and school staff during morning operations, the decision was made to move the truck to Daren Baker Milan Community Park.
The driver was able to safety eject the load, and crews were able to quickly bring the fire under control.
Crews from Todd’s Wrecker service and Best Way quickly arrived on scene and took over cleanup operations.
This is the second fire of this type within two months at the school.
“Please use this as a reminder that proper Disposal of batteries and other hazardous waste is very important,” the Milan Volunteer Fire Department said in a written statement. “Small lithium batteries from vape, phones, and whatever can quickly start a fire. The driver of the truck deserves a pat on the back for being observant and quick to call for help.”
