Firefly named official state insect for Indiana

Indianapolis, In. — State officials have named the firefly as the official state insect. Governor Holcomb signed SEA236 this week to make the declaration official.

The campaign to honor the firefly began at a school system in the Lafayette area, this year the governor included it in his legislative agenda.

The insect was named by entomologist and Hew Harmony, Indiana resident Thomas Say in 1826.
