A Shelbyville man was killed Saturday night when the vehicle he was driving on I-74 went off the road and struck a tree, police said.
Deputies with the Decatur County Sheriffs Department responded to a two vehicle crash at the 139 mile marker around 11:16 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle that was off the north side of the interstate next to a tree that it had struck. Witnesses told police that the vehicle, driven by 31-year-old Michael Kees, of Shelbyville, was westbound and struck another vehicle while passing.
Kees’ vehicle a 1998 Mercedes passenger car, went off the north side of the roadway into the ditch and struck a tree with the rear of the vehicle, then rolled over before coming to a stop. Kees was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The driver of the second vehicle involved, a 1999 Ford Taurus, was Walter Williams, 55, of Anderson, IN. He was not injured and the vehicle sustained minor damage.
