Eugene C. Krieger, 79, of Greensburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
Born on November 1, 1946, in Batesville, Indiana, Gene was the son of Frederick and Dolories (née Firsich) Krieger. He graduated from Batesville High School in 1965 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy from Purdue University. He maintained a lifelong passion for Purdue and its Boilermakers, often connecting with fellow alumni wherever he traveled.
Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He devoted his career and his life to the foundational elements of agriculture—seeds and soils. As plant manager for Stewart Seeds in Greensburg, he played a central role in the production and quality of hybrid seeds that served farmers across the Midwest. His leadership and expertise helped strengthen the family-owned operation’s reputation for reliable, high-performing seed products. A past president of the Indiana Crop Improvement Association, Gene was a strong advocate for seed certification, improved crop varieties, and sound farming practices.
On June 10, 1967, Gene married Mary Lou Wolf, whom he first met in the St. Paul Lutheran Church Youth Group. They were married at the same church and shared nearly 59 years of devoted marriage filled with love, hard work, and cherished memories.
A man of deep and abiding Christian faith, Gene was actively involved at St. Paul Lutheran Church – Crossroads. He was a member of the Brotherhood, served as a Communion Assistant and on Church Council, and contributed to the Mother-Daughter Banquets. He also volunteered with the Greensburg Community Bread of Life for 19 years and was honored as Volunteer of the Year in 2020.
Gene found great joy in gardening and in serving others. He was known for his optimistic spirit and genuine kindness. He never met a stranger and made it his personal mission to bring a smile to everyone he encountered.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Krieger; children, Debbie (Tim) Mack, Richard (Susan) Krieger, and Jennifer (Andy) Scheele; grandchildren, Hannah Krieger, Noah Mack, Gena (Jayden Pothoof) Mack, Adam Mack, Gretchen Scheele, Joseph Scheele, and Isabelle Scheele; step-grandchild, Myoma Gilbert; step-great-grandchild, Tamiyah Gilbert; and siblings, Kathy (John) Westerfeld, Fred (Ann) Krieger, Doug (Esther) Krieger, and Bob (Anita) Krieger and numerous nieces and nephews.
