Greensburg, In. — After entering a guilty plea in Decatur Circuit Court, Christopher McCarter, 32, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for criminal confinement, a level 3 felony.
Evidence presented by the Greensburg Police Department said McCarter confined a woman at knifepoint in front of her child and slashed her tires in order to keep her from leaving in February of 2017. At the time of his arrest a portable breathalyzer showed McCarter had a BAC of .41.
Judge Timothy Day ordered McCarter to serve 11 years for the original charge and added six years for being a habitual offender.
According to the Indiana Department of Correction website McCarter has previous convictions for battery by bodily waste and possession of a controlled substance in 2007.
Level 3 felons serve at least 75 percent of their sentences. McCarter will be eligible for programming and substance abuse treatment from the state.
Decatur County prosecutor Nathan Harter thanked the Greensburg Police Department and said, ”McCarter took responsibility for his actions and for his ongoing substance abuse issues, which led my office to pursue treatment for him at the Department of Corrections. His heavy sentence can be modified if he takes his recovery seriously. We are grateful for the bravery of the adult and child witnesses in this case who told the story of the events that night, and we hope Mr. McCarter will weigh the incentives he has to rehabilitate himself and rejoin society and his family on the other side of incarceration.”
