Charles Dennis Huneke

Charles Dennis Huneke, 89, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at the IU Health Bloomington Hospice House following a sudden illness. Dennis was born in Batesville, Indiana on August 13, 1928 to Elmer and Effie Huneke. He had two younger brothers, Tilford and Leon, who preceded him in death.

Dennis married Wanda Frensemeier October 9, 1948. They raised their three daughters in Batesville, Columbus and Madison, IN. Dennis and Wanda enjoyed 54 years of marriage before Wanda passed away on March 15, 2003.

Dennis had a long career in management of lumber and hardware homecenters starting at Steinkamp’s in Batesville. He moved on to Dunlap’s in Columbus, IN before being promoted to manager for them at Hope, IN and then Madison, IN. While in Columbus, he was active in the local Kiwanas Club and the Moose Lodge. He also managed a store for S & T Hardware in Corbin, KY before settling in Bloomington in 1978 as manager for Black Lumber. He retired from Black’s and soon found himself working at Sam’s Club for several years before retiring for good. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and playing cards, listening to music and watching his grandchildren and more recently, his great-grandchildren grow and play.

He is survived by his daughters, Peggy Wormley, of Bloomington, Patti (Marc) Blume, of So. Bend, IN and Pam (Frank) Farris of Bloomington, along with grandchildren: Kelly (DJ) Mullen, Kevin (Molly) Wormley, Jason Blume, Nick Blume, Cerra (Eddie) Deckard, Matthew Farris, Katie Farris and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his former second wife, Jeanette Vanus of Ellettsville, IN and her family.

Dennis was a kind and loving man with a great sense of humor. His life served as a wonderful example for the following generations of how to live and enjoy life. His family is extremely grateful to his recent caregiver, Chanda Ferguson and a couple of his Redbud friends, Albert Fink and Terry Gooley for their kindness and compassion along with the management, staff and other friends at Redbud Retirement Community.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory 4155 South Old State Road 37 in Bloomington from 3-6 pm with funeral service immediately following visitation. Another visitation on Sunday September 3, 2017 will be held in Batesville, IN will be from 12-2pm at Meyers Funeral Home 1150 State Road 46 with graveside service immediately following. Burial will be at St. John United Church of Christ (Huntersville) Cemetery.
