
Carolyn was a 1954 graduate of Greensburg Community High School. She continued her education at DePauw University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, and later received her master’s degree from Butler University.
On July 8, 1956, Carolyn married Arthur “Art” Cleland. Together they shared many years of marriage and raised one daughter, Mary Ann. Art preceded Carolyn in death on September 5, 2020.
Carolyn dedicated her career as a Geologist for Utah International. She was a member of the Sandusky Methodist Church, Milroy Research Literary Club, P.E.O., Rush County Historical Society, and she was committed to the restoration of the Moscow Covered Bridge. A gifted harpist, Carolyn found joy in music and shared her talent with many throughout her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Cleland Swenson, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art Cleland; granddaughter, Andrea Lee Swenson; brother, John Corwin Hancock; and nephew, John Jackman Hancock.
A visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral at 11:00 am at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Margaret Ann Lowe will be officiating. Burial will follow at the South Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Our Hospice or to the Sandusky Methodist Church.
