Batesville (Ranked #10 in 3A) took the lead late and defeated New Palestine 7-6 on Tuesday for the first time in school history. New Palestine got on the board first, leading 1-0 after the top half of the second, but the Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom half to take the lead in the second inning, 2-1. Following two fielding errors in the top of the fifth by the Bulldogs, New Palestine led 3-2, but the lead did not last long. In the bottom of the fifth inning Riley Zink had a pinch hit single on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs. The Bulldogs eventually scored five total runs in the fifth inning.
The four-run lead in the fifth inning was just enough for Batesville to hold off New Palestine for the victory. New Palestine tallied three runs in the failed comeback. Jacob Bain, Jack Walker and Colby Jenkins picked up RBIs to lead the rally, but it was not enough.
Lane Oesterling (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Bulldogs. He surrendered three runs on four hits over five innings, striking out seven. Caleb Raab and Shane Meer entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Raab recorded the last five outs to earn the save for the Bulldogs. It is his third save for the season in only three games played.
Josh Jacques the loss for New Palestine. He surrendered five runs on five hits over two innings.
Walker started the game for New Palestine. He lasted one and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out four.
Trey Heidlage led the Bulldogs with three hits in three at bats.
