Betty L. Holtel, age 88 of Oldenburg, died Monday, December 5, 2016 at her residence. Born November 5, 1928 in Cranberry Prairie, Ohio, she is the daughter of Frances (Nee: Buehler) and William Kaiser. She married Larry Holtel April 22, 1950 at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg. Betty was the assistant Postmaster at the Oldenburg post office for 20 years before retiring May 1, 1995. She was also a member of Holy Family Church, Batesville V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, the Oldenburg Knights of St. John Ladies Auxiliary and a 30 year member of the Eagle Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary.
Betty had many hobbies which included cross stitch quilting, scrabble, word searches, crossword puzzles and playing 500. She was a voracious reader and liked watching the Game Show network as well. A long standing tradition she and Larry enjoyed were Monday night visits from Elmer Siefert to enjoy some homemade wine and watch Antiques Road Show. An excellent cook and baker, her family will miss Betty’s fried chicken and German potato salad as well as her cookies and angel food cake. A people person, Betty loved her years at the post office and being able to visit with everyone.
She is survived by her husband Larry; daughters Mary Jo Beck of Batesville, Nancy Marticke of Batesville, Karen Pratt of Osgood, Indiana; son Robert Holtel of Oldenburg; daughter-in-law Sally Holtel of Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren; one step grandchild; five great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her son Glen Holtel; sisters Rita McGreevy, Irene Treon and brothers Victor, Carl, Luke and Cyril (Rex) Kaiser.
Visitation is Thursday, December 8th, from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday, December 9th, at Holy Family Church with Rev. David Kobak officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the Holy Family Capital Improvement Fund or Safe Passages.
