Betty Jean (Lutes) Empson, 94

Betty Jean (Lutes) Empson, 94, Greensburg, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the Aspen Place Health Campus in Greensburg. Born December 1, 1923 Jackson County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Ford and Gaynell (Harbaugh) Lutes.  Betty was a 1941 graduate of Cortland High school. She then graduated from Indiana University in 1944 with a degree in Home Economics.  Betty was a school teacher for 32 years.  During her career, she taught at Aurora High School, Alexandria High School, Monon High School, Sandcreek High School and then 25 years at South Decatur High School where she retired in 1993. She was a member of the Honeytown Christian Church in Brownstown, a 50-year member of the Brownstown Chapter #264 order of the Eastern Star and currently with the Seymour Chapter. She was also a member of the Decatur County Retired Teachers Association and the Indiana State Teachers Association. She was married to Francis M. Empson on June 13, 1948 in Brownstown and he preceded her in death on December 1, 1996. She is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Larry) Moore, Greensburg, Vivian (Dean) Burbank, Lakeland, Florida; eight grandchildren, Steven (Lori) Mattingley, Lisa (Mark) Turturro, Rebecca (Ed) Nightingale, Robert William “Bill” (Katy) Hedge, Charles (Jennifer) Burbank, William Burbank, Mac A. (Katie) Moore, Mia (Chris) Mincheff; great grandchildren, Jackson Mattingley, Kevin Mattingley, Hailey Turturro, Kendall Turturro, Nathan Turturro, Elizabeth Nightingale, Samantha Nightingale, Sara Grace Hedge, Abigail Hedge, Brenden Mincheff, Nicholas Mincheff, Amy Mincheff, Emily Mincheff, Kai Moore. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; one brother, Russell Lutes; three sisters, Ruby Anderson, Anna Lee Nutter, Marie Loper. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 11th from 5 to 8:00 p.m. at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg.  Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the funeral home with Rev. Dan Richwine officiating. Graveside services will be held in the Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown, Indiana at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Memorials may be made to the Dollars for Scholars at South Decatur High School, Jackson County Historical Society or to the Honeytown Christian Church.
