If you have a missed call from a Caribbean number, don’t call back because it may be a scam.
Last week, we learned about a nationwide hoax called the ‘One Ring Scam’ that is starting to appear in the area. It can happen to anyone who has a cell phone.
Actually a WRBI employee received a missed call that is eerily similar to the apparent scam.
Here’s how the scam works: A scammer will dial a number and may only let it ring once before hanging up. They hope the recipient will call back resulting in charges to the customers cell phone bill. When the recipient makes their monthly cell phone payment, the cell phone company will pay those charges to a bogus company.
A reoccurring area code associated with the scam seems to be 268.
The phone number that appeared on the cell phone of the WRBI associate is (268) 762-0156. The caller ID reads Antigua/Barbuda.
If you receive this type of call, note the date and time and contact your cell phone provider.
