Batesville man flown from two-vehicle crash at local intersection

BATESVILLE, IN — Air Care was called to a car vs. semi wreck at the intersection of State Road 46 and Merkel Road shortly before 7 am Thursday.

Batesville Police say 62-year-old Tipton J. Russell of Muncie was driving a semi pulling a trailer and was turning east onto 46 from Merkel when his trailer was hit in the back by a car heading west on 46 driven by 43-year-old Jared B. Herbert of Batesville.

Herbert’s car was heavily damaged and he had to be cut out of the wreckage by Batesville and Morris firefighters.

Herbert was flown to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with serious injuries.

Batesville Police Lieutenant Danny Hamilton was the investigating officer and was assisted at the scene by Detective Sergeant Mike Manus, Batesville Police Officers Travis Cook, and Haylie Brown, the Batesville and Morris fire departments, Batesville EMS, and University of Cincinnati Air Care.
