Batesville council holds first reading on city court ordinance

Batesville, IN — Batesville City Council this week held the first reading of an ordinance that would dissolve the City Court.

This comes after several months of discussions, the current City Judge advising council about the court’s operations and taking public comments.

The ordinance’s second and final reading is set for the November 14 city council meeting.

A majority of “Yes” votes mean the city court will cease operations on December 31, 2023; a majority of “No” votes mean the court will continue operations beyond that date.

If the City Court is not dissolved, the City Judge position will be on the ballot when municipal races are voted on in November 2023.

The City Court was established in 1971 with the adoption of Chapter 37 in the Batesville City Code.
