Alberta C. “Bert” McQueen, age 39 (+) was born in St. Maurice, Indiana to Henry and Catherine (Laudick) Loechle on November 4, 1928. She slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus with family by her side on June 1, 2023 in Greensburg, IN. She graduated from St Maurice School and then attended business and accounting classes.
Bert’s most cherished time was spent with family; she loved her children and grandchildren and created opportunities for family togetherness. She enjoyed cooking meals, blessing her family with scrumptious food at cookouts, family dinners, and picnics. She also loved to travel. Besides family vacations, she and her sisters took many impromptu trips together exploring different states. She bowled in leagues for many years and broke many records. Bert loved to be outside, especially working in her vegetable or flower gardens. Reading and sewing were also favorite pastimes.
An avid seamstress, she and worked at the Greensburg Dress Factory, Hillenbrand Caskets, and sewed many clothes for individuals, including a lot of doll cloths. Beautiful quilted and crocheted pieces including many afghans were made by Bert and given to family and friends or donated. Bert stayed home as her children were growing up and then rejoined the workforce, working at the Decatur County Courthouse for over 40 years in various offices.
Bert lived with a servant-heart. She was often described as sweet, kind, and caring. Whenever asked for assistance, she did so without hesitation. Whether it was helping at a function, making food for others, babysitting countless times (spoiling the grandchildren with extra love), caring for and visiting the sick, and helping her children with projects. At St Mary Parish in Greensburg, she led bible studies in her home, was head of the social committee, a Eucharistic Minister, rosary group, funeral meal committee, festival volunteer, and helped with VBS. Her Hummingbird Cake had people vying to be first to buy it at the parish festival. Bert was a member of the St. Lawrence Auxiliary and the Linger Awhile Home Ec. Club.
Alberta is survived by family she created – children Richard (Della) Kramer (Palm Coast, FL), Debra Stuart (Greensburg), Anita (Greg) Navarra (Greensburg), and Brian (Laurie) McQueen (Indianapolis). She is grandma to many by birth and others by choice, including Carolyn McKinney, Tony Kramer, Becky Ortman, Joshua Kramer, Joydi Barnard, Kristi Hahn, Carrie Mitchell, Jeremy Blackwelder, Jacob Lynch, Heather Lynch, Matthew Kramer, Jim Stuart II, Eric Stuart, Holly Pasly, Zach Sizemore, Aaron Sizemore, Gregory Navarra, Nathan Navarra, Tyler McQueen, Jackie Savage, Caden McQueen, Maeve McQueen, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and even more from her step-family. Bert was also very close to her nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, son Patrick McQueen, stepsons Harold L McQueen II, Johnny McQueen, Dan McQueen, and siblings Mary (Leon) Humpert, Rita Lawrence, Loretta (Carl) Suding, and Wm “Bill” (Debbie) Loechle.
Services will be on June 8, 2023 at St. Mary Catholic Church with a rosary service starting at 9:30 am followed by visitation until 11:45 am. A funeral Mass celebrating Bert’s life will be held following visitation at 12:00 pm with Father John A. Meyer officiating. Her burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Greensburg, Indiana. The family requests that memorials be sent to St. Mary Catholic Church, Greensburg, Indiana.
