Harold Wayne Caplinger, 85, of Rising Sun, IN, passed away at 6:30 AM, Monday, May 9th, 2016 at Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg, IN. Wayne was born in Greensburg, IN on February 8, 1931, a son of the late Dorothy (Shanks) and Harold Thorton Caplinger. He was a graduate of Milan High School Class of 1948. Wayne served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force as a Airman 1st Class during the Korean War. He was an excellent basketball player in high school and also played for the Air Force traveling team. Wayne was the Plant Superintendent at the Corrugated Box Factory in Aurora, IN where he worked for 37 years. He and his wife Jean also operated the Rising Sun Dairy Queen for 20 years. Wayne was a member of the Rising Sun First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Rising Sun American Legion and the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge. Wayne, along with Bill Doer were the first to broadcast ball games on WSCH. On October 1, 1949 in Rising Sun, he married Norma Jean (Foutty) Caplinger who survives him. Wayne and Jean were married over 66 years.
In addition to his loving wife Jean, Wayne is survived by a son, Thomas Wayne Caplinger, of Dayton, OH; by 5 grandchildren: Jerri Lynn Jackson (Ronald), Michelle Caplinger, Rachel Webb (Jim), Tom Caplinger and Kristen Earls (Brian); by great grandchildren: Shelby, Derek, Aulden, Dillon, Marla Jo, Bella and Jaxon; by brothers, Larry Caplinger (Faye) of Florence, KY and Gary Caplinger (Pam) of Lawrenceburg, IN; by sister Sondra Gurley of Rising Sun, IN; by sister-in-laws JoAnn Caplinger and Mary Foutty of Rising Sun, IN and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his son Jerry Caplinger in 1969 and brother Herschal Caplinger.
Funeral services will be 11 AM, Friday, May 13th at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, IN with Rev. Jim Jenkins officiating. Friends are invited to call Thursday 5-8 PM at Markland Funeral Home. Burial will be at Rising Sun New Cemetery.
