William “Bud” Schmaltz, 87, Moores Hill

William “Bud” Schmaltz, 87, a lifelong resident of Moores Hill, Indiana, passed away on November 6, 2026.

Bud grew up on his family farm, where he developed the toughness, determination, and work ethic that defined him. He was a man who could fix anything, never complained, and was always willing to help. He instilled that same toughness and work ethic in his two sons.

He proudly served as a Dillsboro volunteer firefighter for 41 years and retired after 26 years from the Town of Dillsboro, a community he loved. Bud loved hunting and spending time on his farm. He had a great sense of humor and especially enjoyed teasing his grandchildren. His unmistakable laugh was one of a kind and will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie Schmaltz. He is survived by his eldest son, Dino (Kim) Schmaltz and their children, Sarah Stoneking (Sydney and Madison) and Garrett Schmaltz (Journey); and his younger son Rick (Carolyn) Schmaltz and their children, Charlene (Tyler) Clark (Grant and Gemma) and George (Shelly) Ranshaw (Reed, Dalton and Lacey).

Generations of Bud’s family still call the road where he grew up home. The family he leaves behind will carry on his strength, his work ethic, and his unforgettable sense of humor.

There are no services at this time. Memorials may be given in honor of Bud to Ripley Crossing Activity Fund.
