(Greensburg, IN) — Washington Township will host a gathering Thursday night on two hot topics in township government: township mergers and volunteer fire funding.

Those attending will join a live Indiana Township Association meeting via Zoom. The session is the association’s Southeast region meeting, originating in Hanover.

The meeting is Thursday, October 29, at 6 p.m. It will be in the Studebaker Studio conference room, down the hallway from the township office at 1030 N. Lincoln Street in Greensburg. It is geared toward anyone in township government and volunteer fire leadership.

The first topic is township mergers. In 2027, some townships will be required to merge. The complete list is not out yet. No one knows for certain which townships will have to merge.

That should be known by the end of the year. Thursday’s meeting will cover the timelines. It will also cover what trustees and advisory boards need to make informed decisions, including who merges with whom.

The second topic is volunteer fire. Legislation passed this year requires a stipend of $500 per volunteer firefighter. It applies to townships that contract with volunteer fire departments.

The bill passed after 2026 budgets were set. Many townships had not budgeted for it. The meeting will look at what needs to happen under this year’s bill. It will also look at how townships should budget for it in 2027.

“There are so many unanswered questions about this.”

— Beverly Rivera, Washington Township Trustee

The session is discussion only. No board of any township will make decisions or take votes. It counts as a Washington Township Advisory Board meeting if two or more board members attend.

Enter under the Studebaker Studio awning or through the hallway by the township office. Do not park in spots with reserved signs.
