(Aurora, IN) _ Father Jonathan Meyer, a local pastor and high school cross country coach, hit the trails to participate in the historic American Discovery Trail Relay in honor of the 250th anniversary of America.

On Monday morning, Fr. Meyer logged 7.9 miles on foot, running a scenic route from Hartford Pike in Rising Sun to Gabbard Park in Aurora.

As he ran, he carried a symbolic red baton engraved with the word “Life,” inside of which was a rolled-up copy of the Declaration of Independence (pictured).

Fr. Meyer serves as the pastor for a five-parish community that includes All Saints, St. Teresa, St. Lawrence, and St. Mary’s.

He is also the Cross Country Coach at East Central High School.

Born in 1976—the year of America’s Bicentennial—and turning 50 years old this year, participating in this historic transcontinental event held deep personal and patriotic significance for him.

The transcontinental relay features countless participants who have carried the baton across the nation since the journey began on July 4th at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The relay is scheduled to conclude its coast-to-coast trek near the end of November.

During his nearly 8-mile leg, Fr. Meyer wore a striking black t-shirt emblazoned with the word “Life.” He said the shirt served as a solemn reminder of all the Americans who have never been given the chance to live in this country due to abortion.

As Fr. Meyer made his final strides into Gabbard Park, he was greeted with an enthusiastic welcome by the students of St. Mary’s Pre-School, who gathered to celebrate the completion of his leg of the historic national relay.
