(Batesville, IN) – A High-Intensity Activated Cross Walk, also known as HAWK, is now in place near Arlington Drive and Wessel Road in Batesville.

It’s part of the city’s State Road 229 sidewalk project.

Batesville officials say there are rules for HAWK including for drivers and cyclists on the street:

  • Unlike regular traffic signals, HAWK signals only illuminate when a pedestrian activates the crossing button.
  • Always proceed with caution when the signal is off.
  • Slow down when the signal is flashing yellow.
  • Prepare to stop when the signal is solid yellow.
  • Stop when the signal is solid red.
  • When the signal is flashing red, make sure to keep an eye out for all crosswalk travelers and proceed with caution.

For pedestrians and cyclists using the crosswalk:

  • The HAWK signal works similar to other regular traffic signals.
  • Lights on the HAWK signal are activated by pushing the crossing button or waving at the white box area above the crossing button.
  • Start crossing when the walking human symbol is on; continue crossing during the countdown.
  • Cyclists should dismount and walk their bicycles while using the crosswalk.
  • Do not cross when the red hand symbol is on.
