(Greensburg, IN) – Greensburg City Council held first reading Tuesday night on an ordinance dealing with “unlawful” deposits of snow.
The measure was prompted by last winter’s storms that dumped 13 inches on the Tree City.
The city’s Building Commissioner, Sarah Hamer, says a number of people complained about snow removal contractors piling the white stuff in front of businesses, which made seeing around it while pulling vehicles in or out of parking lots difficult and dangerous.
Hamer says a letter will be sent to all business owners in the city, advising them of the new rules.
“When they have contractors come for snow removal in their parking lot, they should push it toward the back of the business, if possible, and away from exits or entrances,” Hamer said. “This isn’t something we deal with every winter because we don’t get that significant amount of snow every winter. But that way, it holds that business accountable. They will be responsible for notifying hte contractor that use of this change in the ordinance, if approved.”
Councilmembers raised questions as to whether residents would be affected by the proposed ordinance.
After a brief discussion, council directed Hamer to amend the ordinance to have it apply to businesses only.
The proposal will be brought back next month with changes.
