(Ripley County, IN) – The passing of Dolly Parton last week brought out numerous reactions throughout the world, and here at home.
Parton died at the age of 80 following a brief bout with cancer.
Ripley County Community Foundation Executive Director Amy Streator says the legendary singer taught us all the value of philanthropy – specifically through Imagination Library.
The program gifts free, high-quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five on a monthly basis, regardless of family income.
“The whole point is to promote literacy and understanding that when children are young, that’s when they’re are sponges. That’s when their brains are developing the most and it’s really important to get books in front of them,” Streator said. “I think what a great testament to Dolly Parton to help support that program locally and to make a donation to ensure that our local children have access to books, and have the ability to start learning and build those skills at an early level.”
The Ripley County program kicked off in October 2023, and is a partnership between the community foundation, Southeastern Indiana YMCA, and the Batesville, Osgood/Milan and Tyson libraries.
