Robert Gerald Coomer, 68, of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Dearborn Hospital in Lawrenceburg.
Born in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 10, 1957, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mildred (Brandenburg) Coomer. Robert grew up in Lawrenceburg and graduated from Lawrenceburg High School in 1976. Shortly after graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he honorably served his country from 1976 to 1980.
Following his military service, Robert began a long and dedicated career at Miami Fort, now Duke Energy, where he worked as a boiler operator for 32 years. He retired in 2012 after many years of faithful service.
Robert was an avid, die-hard Indiana University fan, with his beloved Cincinnati Reds a close second. He never wanted to miss a game and became quite the archivist over the years, meticulously recording games on VHS tapes in the early days and later digitally recording them on television.
Above all else, Robert was a devoted family man and an extraordinary father and grandfather. Everything he did and all the hard work he put in throughout his life was with his family in mind, especially his grandchildren. He loved nothing more than putting a smile on their faces and making sure they were happy and cared for. In his final days, Robert was surrounded by the people he loved most, resting with his arms around his grandchildren, seeing their smiles and wearing an even bigger smile of his own. He was never prouder than when he was being called “Papaw.”
Robert will be deeply and lovingly missed by his wife and life partner of 46 years, Jessie (Baker) Coomer. The two began their lives together when they were very young and spent 46 years creating countless happy memories and building a life filled with love and family.
He leaves behind a beautiful legacy through his two daughters, Amanda Baker and Brittany Baker (Jamie Stortz); four grandchildren, Chloe (Blake) Lynn, Miley Jade Stortz, Kaydence Joycelynn Stortz, and Graysyn Stortz; and his first great-grandchild, Ryder Lynn.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 11:00 am at Greendale Cemetery, Greendale, Indiana.
