(Versailles, IN) – Around 200 people attended a town hall meeting at the Versailles Community Center on Monday night to discuss Versailles State Park Lake’s current condition and future.
About 60 percent of the lake is filled with sediment, which is adversely affecting recreational activities.
Sediment has been building in the lake for several decades.
In addition, the dam has been rated “conditionally poor.”
One option to prevent future problems that was discussed would involve dredging portions of the lake and construction of a spillway for the dam.
The price tag could reach $180 million, but the park’s current budget cannot cover that amount; Indiana DNR says it will try to obtain state funding.
A petition drive to save the lake has been launched through ICareAboutVersaillesStateParkLake.org.
As of Tuesday morning, the nearly six thousand signatures had been collected.
