(Indianapolis, IN) – Indiana State Police arrested a man Sunday morning after a Saturday night stabbing at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Troopers assigned to the fair responded to a food vendor booth just before 10:30 p.m. Investigators say an argument between two vendor employees ended with a 20-year-old man being slashed with a sharp object.
Arriving troopers immediately rendered first aid to the victim, who was then treated at the scene by on-site EMS and transferred to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
ISP says the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Steven Mimms of Indianapolis, ran away before officers arrived on the scene.
The initial investigation by State Police detectives indicated the altercation occurred between two employees who worked for a third-party vendor booth at the fair, and that no one attending the fair was involved.
ISP and a SWAT team later tracked Mimms to a home, where he was found hiding in the attic around 8 a.m. Sunday.
Mimms was arrested on preliminary charges of Attempted Murder, Escape (from home detention), and Resisting Law Enforcement.
He was transported to an Indianapolis area hospital for evaluation, and was expected to be held in the Marion County Justice Center pending the filing of formal charges by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the ISP Versailles Post is working the state fair.
“We have troopers at stations throughout the day, 24 hours a day, when the fair’s going on,” Wheeles said. “Even when the fair is closed at night, we have troopers patrolling the grounds.”
The investigation is still ongoing.
